Shakib guides Tigers to series win(13-Oct-2010)

Bangladesh have won their first ever one-day international series against a full-strength Test-playing nation after claiming a thrilling nine-run victory over New Zealand in the fourth ODI at Dhaka.

Centuries from players on either side lit up a nail-biting spectacle, however it was the Tigers who held their nerve at the death to move 3-0 ahead with one game to play.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al-Hasan made 106 in his side's 241 all out - a total they managed to defend despite Kane Williamson's maiden ODI ton.

Williamson, playing in only his fifth ODI, became the youngest New Zealander to score a century in limited-overs cricket, though his memorable knock of 108 could not deny Bangladesh a famous win.

New Zealand were dismissed for 232 in the final over of the match, Williamson the last man to depart after Shakib claimed a game-winning catch on the mid-wicket boundary.

The 20-year-old right-hander led the run-chase almost single handedly as the Black Caps attempted to bounce back from two defeats in the opening three matches of the series.

He came to the middle with New Zealand toiling on 35-3 and quickly found his stride with some confident strokes off both front and back foot.

No Kiwi batsman from the top six could stick with Williamson though; only Grant Elliott spent any significant time in the middle with the youngster.

The pair put on 70 for the sixth wicket - of which Elliott contributed 22 - before the partnership was broken when Shakib lured Elliott into a top-edged sweep.

Kyle Mills (8) came and went, but Nathan McCullum reignited New Zealand's hopes of victory with a brisk 33 down the order.

Needing 24 off the final two overs, the game looked to be up for the Kiwis when they lost McCullum when he ran himself out in the penultimate over.

Williamson rallied by hitting the first two balls of the final over for four and then two. However, with 10 more required, he could only swat Shafiul Islam down the throat of Shakib in the deep.

Earlier, Shakib cracked his fifth ODI century to propel the Tigers to a competitive toal.

The Bangladesh captain hit one six and 11 fours in his 113-ball 106, sharing 53 for the fourth wicket with opener Imrul Kayes (37), 51 for the fifth with Mushfiqur Rahim (13) and then putting on a further 68 with number eight Mohammad Mahmudullah (37).

Debutant Kiwi seamer Hamish Bennett finished 3-44, while skipper Daniel Vettori, Daryl Tuffey and Mills all took two wickets apiece.
